The first school was at Ngawo at that old CCAP church run by the missionaries. The first african to be appointed Inspector of schools from Chilumba to Usisya was James Jeya Kanyoloka Nyirenda(JJ).The set up was pupils were doing Makwelelo and other names of classes then borodi infact borodi is a corruption of word boarding then std 1,2,3,4 .After standard 4 all pupils from Chilumba to Usisya could congregate at Chitimba for final entrance exams to be selected to go to Livingstonia to join other students from neighbouring countries like Northern Rhodesia(Zambia)and Tanganyika to do 5 and 6 which was like High School then do some tertially becoming medics, teachers, clerks and pastors. These people were in high in the civil service and neighbouring countries demand because those qualifications were only acquired at Livingstonia as a high education institution
Mlowe had 3 primary schools at one time. That song of Wambali the original version is WAVUNDA MWACHIWOLE TABANA BAKATOLIKA TIKULILA NYAMUSEMA(first wife of Jutu Chilumanga Mnthali liked by everybody) Katolika had a thriving primary school people like late Dr Denis Simphawaka Nkhwazi, late Madongoni,Khuta Mhango of Nkhombwa went there, from there to St Patricks Seminary(Rumphi) then it was a primary school then to Katete in Nkhamenya. So many people went to school there like late Reggie Msowoya and Richard Mwankhonyolo Mwamlowe and many-many.Emmanuel also was a school people like Kayizondole Kumwenda ,Msutu Kalua even the Themba Mwamlowestarted there. The reason why these schools died was due to finances while those at LEA were on govt payroll.
